bionic-vision.org is a community-run, non-commercial information platform (see our Mission Statement). We try to collect as little personal information as possible. This page explains what we do collect, why, and the choices you have.
When you first visit the site, a banner asks whether you'll allow analytics cookies. Nothing analytics-related is set until you choose Accept; choosing Decline keeps them off. Your choice is remembered so you won't be asked again on the same browser.
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Duration | Requires consent? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics (GA4) | Aggregate, anonymized-where-possible stats on how visitors use the site (pages viewed, rough location/device), so we know what content is useful | Up to 13 months | Yes |
connect.sid | bionic-vision.org | Keeps you signed in after Google sign-in. Only set for contributors/admins who sign in to edit content—not for ordinary visitors | 7 days | No (essential) |
cookieConsent | bionic-vision.org | Remembers your Accept/Decline choice. Stored in your browser's local storage, not as an actual cookie | Until you clear site data | No (essential) |
You can change your mind at any time by clearing cookieConsent from your browser's local storage (or clearing site data for bionic-vision.org), which brings the banner back on your next visit. Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies directly, and Google offers a browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics across all sites.
If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics collects standard usage data (pages visited, approximate location derived from IP, browser/device type, referring site). We don't use this to identify you individually, and we don't sell or share it beyond Google acting as our analytics processor.
We do not run ads and do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Editing content on this site requires signing in with Google. When you do, we receive your name, email address, and Google account ID from Google, which we use only to identify you as a contributor/admin and attribute content changes (see our Verification Process). This is separate from, and unaffected by, the analytics cookie choice above.
Much of this site's content is public-interest information about researchers, companies, and institutions working in bionic vision—names, affiliations, and professional details, generally sourced from public profiles or provided directly by the people/organizations listed. This isn't information about you as a visitor to the site. If you're listed on the site and want something corrected or removed, please contact us.
We share data with the following third parties, only as needed to run the site:
We don't sell personal information to anyone.
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
