The Brainport V100 is the first oral electronic vision aid to be introduced to the public. The Brainport converts visual images to electrotactile stimulations on the tongue for the user to interpret.

Background

Images in real time are downsized and converted to grayscale stimulations that are measured in strength by the brightness of the pixels. Those stimulations are then represented by an electro-tactile stimulation on the tongue. These stimulations are interpreted approrpiately by the user after extensive training which will teach the user how to understand these stimulations as visual representations.
