The intramural ICVP was formed in 1986 from the NIH's NPP to create a cortical visual prosthesis based on the hat pin (penetrating) electrodes developed by NPP. NIH intramural contributions stopped in late 1990s. In 2000, Troyk reformed the ICVP as purely extramural to NIH.
