At Phosphoenix, we are developing a pioneering neuroprosthetic system designed to restore functional vision in people with profound blindness.

Our technology interfaces directly with the visual system of the brain using an innovative implant containing a high number of microelectrodes. By electrically stimulating precisely targeted neural structures, our goal is to create visual percepts that can help users navigate their surroundings and regain a meaningful degree of independence.

We are an ambitious Amsterdam-based MedTech company working at the intersection of neurotechnology, microfabrication, medical device engineering and neuroscience. Having advanced our technology through preclinical development, we are now preparing the next generation of our system and working towards first-in-human clinical evaluation.

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Senior Medical Implant Engineer to help us take this technology through its next critical stage of development.

Role & Responsibilities

As Senior Medical Implant Engineer, you will play a central role in the design, development and industrialisation of our implantable neurotechnology.

You will work on highly miniaturised implantable components incorporating flexible materials and hundreds to thousands of electrode contacts. Your challenge is to translate ambitious technical concepts into robust, manufacturable and well-documented medical devices suitable for preclinical and ultimately clinical use.

This is a highly hands-on role. You will combine engineering and problem-solving with coordination of suppliers and manufacturing partners, design documentation and structured medical-device development.

You will work closely with our CTO, engineers, neuroscientists, quality and regulatory specialists, clinical collaborators and external development and manufacturing partners.

Basic Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Microengineeringor a related technical discipline.
  • Several years of relevant experience in medical-device, biomedical, microtechnology or other high-tech product development.
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills and the ability to translate complex technical problems into practical solutions.
  • Experience with mechanical design, materials, manufacturing processes and/or miniaturised devices.
  • Understanding of electrical engineering concepts and taking these into account in the product design.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary product-development teams.
  • Strong focus on reliability and robustness, already from the start of the design
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership while collaborating effectively with specialists from different disciplines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to move comfortably between the technical details and the bigger picture.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • A pragmatic, flexible and can-do mentalitysuited to a fast-moving MedTech environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly valuable:

  • Implantable medical devices or neurotechnology.
  • Flexible electronics, thin-film technology, microfabrication or MEMS.
  • Medical-device design controls and product development under ISO 13485.
  • Risk management under ISO 14971.
  • Verification and validation of medical devices.
  • Biocompatible materials and long-term implantable devices.
  • Supplier and contract-manufacturer management.
  • Design for manufacturing and transfer from prototype to controlled production.
  • Systems engineering methods and tools.
  • Development of Class III or other high-risk medical devices.
  • Preclinical or clinical-stage medical-device development.
