Russell Van Gelder, M.D., Ph.D., is a board certified ophthalmologist at Harborview and UW Medical Center, director of the UW Medicine Eye Institute, UW’s Boyd K. Bucey Memorial Chair of Medicine, chair and professor of UW Ophthalmology and an adjunct professor of Biological Structure and Pathology. Dr. Van Gelder’s goal is to give each patient the care he would give his own family and to help the patient make the best medical decisions. Dr. Van Gelder earned his M.D. and Ph.D. at Stanford. He has won numerous awards for research and published widely. Nationally, he is a trustee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and serves as chair of the council. He is past president of the American Uveitis Society. He is a trustee of the Society of Heed Fellows and on the scientific advisory board for Foundation Fighting Blindness.
