The main research topic of the Im lab is retinal prosthetics, which is a specific research area of neural engineering. For significantly enhanced artificial vision (e.g. improved spatial resolution), a technical breakthrough should take place in implantable microelectrode arrays using microfabrication technologies. However, the limited performance of existing state-of-the-art devices suggests a game-changing innovation requires much deeper understanding of the retina. Their previous works have substantially increased our understanding of properties of retinal neurons in response to electric stimulation. The Im Lab is eager to develop advanced next-generation retinal implants using new insights obtained from those studies as well as their expertise in micro-/nano-fabrication.
