The Very Large Electrode Array Retinal Stimulator (VLARS) is an epiretinal prosthesis conceptualized as having a much larger surface area than existing retinal implants, with the goal of restoring a wider field of vision. The implant is placed on the surface of the retina, rather than under it, and uses uses electrical stimulation to activate retinal neurons.
The VLARS is currently a concept being developed and has been tested in preclinical studies to assess its feasibility and safety. It is not yet available to the public.
